Welcome 2 LA is both an anthem and love letter from my soul to my city. This is the first single I have ever self produced with a music video I am also the director of. My journey with the song began Jan 6th 2022 when I was commissioned by DUBLAB founder Mark Frosty for a sound installation currently being featured at the Los Angeles International Airport.  The prompt was that every composer (I was one of 30 LA based musicians tapped for the project) stay within the key of C Major and at 100bpm. The end result would be a sound installation blending our stems into each other informed by an algorithm based on flight pattern data, weather and migration patterns. So essentially DUBLAB transposed the airport into an autonomous DJ - with our stems as the record crate. The DUBLAB Orchestrina System, installation which will be up for 2-3 years.

The day I started making the beat I asked Annabelle Freedman to give it a listen and beta test the vibe for me. And instantly they began to sanging the chorus within the first 30 seconds of hearing it. During that time I was still attending UC Irvine and becoming closer to one of my mentors John Murillo III, who was teaching a class called Caring For Black Lives and later taught me A Hip Hop reflection course. I would joke around at the end of our classes via ZOOM and say “yo when am I gonna get that Murillo feature on an album?” Then the last day of class of Spring quarter I sent him a demo of the song W2LA and he wrote a piece that was exactly as long as the beat was and fit perfectly.

When considering the visual I wanted to make something that spoke to the space I'm from. The people are the landscape, they are the reason I live and thrive here. My community is where I find my pocket of safety. With that intention in mind we filmed the video in spaces I felt deep connections with over the course of three days. We mobilized the music in The Plant Chica, Reparations Club, The Salt Eaters, Leimert Park, MacArthur Park, and Kenneth Hahn Park. I used this time to film the music video and tour my city with a series of pop-up shows as I shared the song all across my hometown.

As my good friend Kenny Zhao who played both bass and keys on this song has said, “Before we had platforms we had spaces.” The vision was to bring a live experience that would be documented as people engage with the music for the first time. Special thanks 2 Betawave.TV for coming through with the camera work for this entire project. Welcome 2 LA is about showing reverence to the land, people, and spaces that remind me of what home feels like.

[Def Verse 1]:
Aye
To live and thrive in LA
We 5 ppl a day
We 5 minutes away
We doing it big in 5 different miniature ways
We missing you Nip
This marathon isn’t a race
Aye
Touching base with the homies,
I’m doing it for the doers I’m doing it for the dreamers
The gentrified and immigrant ancestors and dulas
The word workers and healers
I see us all in the mirror
Before rodeo was Obama
My Mornings Became Eclectic
Spitting it like a Llama
A legend right off of Western
From South Central 2 The World
South Central 2 The whole wide world
South Central 2 The World
From South Central 2 The World
x2
South Central 2 the....

[HOOK]

[Def Verse 2]:
Aye I be really from here
If you stayed in Hollywood then you ain’t really come here
Bruh you can’t say you love here
Uh Unless you know somebody From here
It’s in Everything that I’ve done
The everything that I am
And every song that I’ve sung

And Everything I’ve become
On everything that I love
On everything

[John Murillo III Poem]
If you hear the portamento whine spill and slide behind bombastic rhymes, you’re here,
where we bounce and walk to booming riot drums, marching police boots, and thumb-
thumping p-funk bass-lines. It’s our groove in good and bad times, the line on the
corona of our singular sunshine, the sol of our souls and the soles of our shoes tracing
and erasing sets atop the palm frond shadows on busted concrete or, you know, just
walking our walk. Not for lack of trying, the sunshine baked into our Black skin can’t be
gentrified away; and, no, and not for lack of trying, the dootdootdootdoots, batons, and
military grade boots can’t jettison the suns from we, angelic daughters and sons and
otherwise-identified denizens of hot and hallowed streets.
This is the golden spacetime we built and build and will build with hands differently
stained by sunlight, and we are stained glass windows, amalgamated conduits
refracting the timeless blessing of the sol soul star smiling through us. If you look, really
look, squint your eyes and screw your face and look, feel the singular heat on your flesh
and breeze ‘cross your chest and distant ocean in your nostrils and look, you might see
the vexy angels we are, the deep and untimely beings we be, and the light of the
impossible stories we bleed, and sweat, and cultivate, cook, conjure, and write, and die,
and live: all that we are is where and when you’ve arrived.
So when you step into the sunshine, stop, feel, breathe, look, and listen, before you
slide and glide into the kingdom. Feel the heat. Hear the rhymes. See life, see our lives.
What more can I say? Welcome to LA.
