I think all hip hop albums should begin w/ a long ass saxophone intro.
“Hey bro! Sending you a few goodies to break the ice. This could potentially be a great partnership. Anyhow, I figure we're in the same boat, so we may as well go sailing. “ that was the email sent to me by jazz musician Brandon Crumbly back in March of 2016, the producer of this song. The original beat was called Joyride. I instantly found a pocket but wasn’t sure I had a song until I sent it to my brother (my actual blood brother) Carlos Ricketts Jr. and he said he loved it and would sign backgrounds on it. Over time I would listen to the Dev Hynes Negro Swan and NoName Room 26 albums and want to add more live elements so I brought in my band (The Colored Experience) drummer Branden Akinyele for that organic no GMO swing and David Michael Otis of Katalyst to slay the sax. Disc 1ne is about the coming home to one's roots, it's about reconnecting w/ your source and all the mirrors that reflect you. The first words of the album are I AM. This song is very I AM. It felt like it was the perfect palette cleanser for the rest of the record even though nothing else on the record sounds like this.
